Understanding Oral Sleep Appliances

Types of Oral Sleep Appliances:

There are different types of OSAs, each with its own mechanism of action. One of the most common types is the Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). As the name suggests, MADs work by advancing the lower jaw forward, which pulls the tongue and soft tissues away from the back of the throat, opening the airway.

How MADs Help with OSA:

Studies have shown that MADs can be effective in treating mild to moderate OSA. They can reduce the number of apneas per hour, improve sleep quality, and reduce daytime sleepiness. MADs are also a good option for people who cannot tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the gold standard treatment for OSA.

Benefits of MADs:

  • Non-invasive: MADs are comfortable to wear and do not require any surgery or masks.

  • Portable: They are small and lightweight, making them easy to travel with.

  • Easy to use: MADs are simple to insert and remove.

  • Effective: MADs can significantly improve OSA symptoms.

  • Cost-effective: Compared to CPAP, MADs are generally less expensive.
